A popular alternative  for travelers who are on a budget is to stay at bed & breakfasts.  There are two types of B&B's that you can choose from. The first type is rooms within a home or inn that shares the common areas such as living rooms, kitchens, salons (similar to a european hostel) etc...  The second type would be similar to a hotel or motel room where the room is completely separate from the home and the access to the dining areas is limited to the breakfast hours.  Either option provides a great opportunity to get to meet, and socialize with, other guests, as well as your hosts, who usually are a wealth of information for local customs, travel tips and knowledge about interesting sites that are off the beaten path.
